Fighting for Parental Rights in America: Who would have thought?

In an email this morning, November 27th:

"Yesterday afternoon, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (NV) announced that the Senate will vote to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) this week. We need you to call your two senators immediately, and urge them to oppose the CRPD.

U.S ratification of the CRPD would subject our domestic law to United Nations standards and oversight, threatening parental rights and American self-government.

Thirty-six Senators have signed a letter stating that they “respectfully request that no treaties be brought to the Senate floor for advice and consent during the lame-duck session of the 112th Congress.” These Senators have promised in the letter that they “will oppose efforts to consider a treaty during this time.” Senator Reid has purposefully ignored this letter by promising to file cloture (so the filibuster cannot be used) and will make every attempt to proceed to the CRPD for ratification this week."

This is a "feel good" treaty that promises things like wheelchair ramps overseas for veterans. In reality, this treaty will NOT force changes overseas.  It WILL forces changes here in America. It WILL trump US law and state law when it comes to parents of children with disabilities. AND it is a slippery slope (in my opinion) to the passage of another UN treaty, Convention on the Rights of Children. If you'd like to know about this treaty click here.

There can be no doubt that parents are the persons best suited to make decisions regarding their children with disabilities, NOT government bureaucrats. This treaty is another step towards BIG government and not only big government but American law bound under international law.

It is sad to me that veterans are promoting this treaty with big hopes, when this treaty undermines the very reason they have served our country: for American sovereignty. Here is a link for petition for veterans who are opposed to this treaty.

Here is a link for persons with disabilities and parents of children with disabilities.

And here is a general petition for the rest of us Americans who would like to keep decision concerning our families within our own families.

If you can take 5-10 minutes of you time to call your Senator, you can find phone numbers here.

You can share this in your own words:

The CRPD will surrender parental rights for those with disabilities or for children with disabilities, by making the government responsible to determine what is best for each child. Loving parents can better make life-changing decisions for a child than the government can.

Tell them, too, that American lawmakers did a great job with the Americans with Disabilities Act, making us a leader in disability rights. We do not need to pass off our law-making authority to a U.N. committee under this treaty. We don’t need other nations setting our domestic policy. We became the world leader by setting our own course, not by following everyone else’s.

Alrighty my fellow Americans, let's fight the good fight!
