O Come, O Come Emmanuel!
O Wisdom (O Sapientia)
O Wisdom that comest out of the mouth of the Most High, that reachest from one end to another, and orderest all things mightily and sweetly, come to teach us the way of prudence!
O COME, O come, Emmanuel,
and ransom captive Israel,
that morns in lonely exile here
until the Son of God appear.
R: Rejoice! Rejoice! O Israel,
to thee shall come Emmanuel!
and ransom captive Israel,
that morns in lonely exile here
until the Son of God appear.
R: Rejoice! Rejoice! O Israel,
to thee shall come Emmanuel!
O come, Thou Wisdom, from on high,
and order all things far and nigh;
to us the path of knowledge show,
and teach us in her ways to go. R.
and order all things far and nigh;
to us the path of knowledge show,
and teach us in her ways to go. R.
These Antiphons are read on the seven "Golden Nights" before Christmas Eve. December 17-23.
Each Antiphon begins with "O" and a title that adresses Jesus with a unique and historical title. These titles come from the prophesies of Isaiah and Micah. The initials of these titles, when read backwards, form an acrostic for the Latin "Ero Cras" which means "Tomorrow I come." The titles for Jesus are:
Sapientia (Wisdom) Isaiah 11:2-3 and 28:29
Adonai (Lord) Isaiah 11:4-5, 33:22
Radix Jesse (Root of Jesse) Isaiah 11:1, 11:10, Micah 5:1, Romans 15:8-13
Clavis Jesse (Key of David) Isaiah 22:22, Isaiah 9:6
Oriens (Radiant Dawn, Dayspring) Isaiah 9:2, Isaiah 9:6
Rex Gentium (King of All Nations) Isaiah 9:7, Isaiah 2:4
Emmanuel (God with us) Isaiah 7:14
ERO CRAS
