Just Checking In . . . (on this Monday of Holy Week)

The weather outside is . . .

nippy. Below freezing. Brr. Still, I think the kids and I may bundle up in our winter gear and go on an outdoor walk of the Stations of the Cross.

Around the house . . .

A new "friend."  Free too!  Well, sorta free. We had to rent a UHaul truck to pick it up.  And it needs a tuning sometime soon. We are thrilled.

Two weekends ago I had great fun with my first upcycling project.

I  bought this for $6 at St. Vicent dePaul's thrift store
and turned it into . . .

this.  Neat, huh? Aaah, the small pleasures in life.

To go with the $6 desk for my birthday sewing machine. Wahoo!!

I had so much fun that I went out and bought another one to try it again.

 We are reading . . .

Both boys are enjoying The Silver Chair by C.S. Lewis for pleasure. Sage wants me to say that he is also reading Dr. Dolittle (I'm also reading this to Nutmeg).  For more educational pursuits, Sage is reading Galen and the Gateway to Medicine.  Basil is reading Journey to the Bottomless Pit: The Story of Stephen Bishop and Mammoth Cave.  We are visiting Mammoth Cave this spring, so we are doing a little reading on the area.

I am relishing my rabbit trail into Louis de Wohl's treasury of historical fiction on the lives of various saints.  I highly recommend The Joyful Beggar.  Before I pick up the next novel on St. Helen and her son, Constantine, I'm reading a biography on Mother Teresa.

In the kitchen . . .

I'm just happy to be back in the kitchen.  After that week with the flu with not much eating in general and what we did manage to was neither very nutritious or tasty, I am grateful to be back to flavor and fresh vegetables.

One of our new favorite meatless meals.  It is suprisingly flavorful.  Lentil and Potato Soup.

Our annual Saint Patrick's Day dinner.

Well, darn. I was hoping to stick around and write a longer post but the time has run away from me. I am late for breakfast. Sorry about that. Here are a few pictures from our lives lately.

We wish you a blessed Holy Week.

Attempting to keep Mace busy while the others work on assignments.

Drinking sap from our neighbor's maple tree. He and his family were all up at his house boiling sap all day Saturday. We went
over for several hours on Saturday to visit.

On a walk Sunday afternoon. Keeping up  with the gang!

Today's quote from Mother Teresa:

"The world is lost for want of sweetness and kindness.  People are starving for love because everybody is in such a great rush."

  1. I love everything you are doing and your great finds!!! Cannot wait to see the piano...I used to know how to play...some...Kyra plays, Julie could if she would, and Doug for sure will have no trouble picking it up. He tested high in musical abilities in Junior high...This is so exciting. I love what you did with the chair!! I love the picture by Sage. Mace is showing attention span...good for him...and he has some colors sorted there. Nutmeg is writing on her board...Oh, and they are all reading good books!! Can't wait to see you all Friday and apparently you will not be getting new snow...but maybe flurries on Thursday. But...it is spring! Just not the weather. So back to winter coats...Kisses to everyone. Glad you are well again. I am ready to see all these things. Maybe get out the preschool kit I made......Mace might be able to put a small puzzle together.
    Hugs and kisses!!
