The kids and I read through the Sermon on the Mount this morning. Just now, in fact. I thought I'd type it out here for you real quickly, just to pass along the peace we enjoyed this morning. It was so neat to talk through each beatitude with the kids. They had such insightful things to say about many of them. Jesus sure is counter-cultural, isn't He? No wonder he continues to ruffles feathers across the ages. I can easily see how I can practice every single one of these personally every. single. day. They are certainly as relevant today as they were two thousand years ago. Following Christ sure is about delayed gratification isn't it? I mean, really. "Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven . . . " Certainly counter-cultural.
The kids and I each chose a beatitude to work on today. Basil and Nutmeg chose to work on being peacemakers. Sage and I are choosing to work on being merciful. Maybe we should read this every day. :)
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you."
Matthew 5:3-12
